Colin Foster

Last week I got confused. The table I made was a replica of a bauhaus-era design. After my crit I think that there was a lot I was trying to understand both with my own ongoing theme of restoration and also with what I was trying to understand. I spent a time reading about "modernist" art. specifically looking at donald judd, serra, and others of the time as an extension of what the bauhaus seemed to start. All the movements and artist have both bored and attracted and confused me for some time. While they claim they are honest and modest with materials and craft, their finished products feel absent of the simplicity or honesty they seek. Using what I would call honest materials of our time-duct tape, plastic crates, spackle-I made this. I realized that all of those mostly escape my knowledge of production though...

I am also struggling with how this ties into what I was working on before spring break. It feels connected, but I also think of this more like a craft study than an art piece.

The direction I was going with my work started to change and has moved slowly from material studies into a more personal realm of self realization and construction.
